Plot overview
"You don't know who his supporters are, you don't know who's working for him and who isn't; you know he can control people so that they do terrible things without being able to stop themselves. You're scared for yourself, and your family, and your friends. Every week, news comes of more deaths, more disappearances, more torturing... The Ministry of Magic's in disarray, they don't know what to do, they're trying to keep everything hidden from the Muggles, but meanwhile, Muggles are dying too. Terror everywhere... panic... confusion..."
It's September 1976. The Death Eater Rebellion has been ongoing for five increasingly gruesome years. It began with simple acts of violence, muggle-borns and Muggles the primary victims, and then it escalated, turning specifically towards those deemed blood traitors.
Early in his campaign, Lord Voldemort set in progress a plan to infiltrate the Ministry of Magic with his followers. Those he could not turn or replace were forced under the Imperius curse, and now, five years on, these people are well-trusted, well-liked, and able to operate with complete autonomy: secretaries, Unspeakables, even the Head of the Hit Wizard Department.
With the Ministry compromised, Lord Voldemort has turned his attention back to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He himself was rejected twice from a teaching position at the school and he delighted in placing Rodolphus Lestrange, one of his most ardent and loyal followers, in it. Although no-one has realised it yet, Rodolphus is a direct line from Hogwarts to Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters at large. It's only a matter of time before the annex is complete...
This is a time of terror and intimidation. The Death Eaters are masked, anonymous, and completely integrated into normal society. Anyone, anywhere could be one of them -- who will you trust?

The story so far
Defence Against the Dark Arts professor Thaddeus Cattermoul was found dead in his home over the summer, a Death Eater attack that made more headlines than most because Cattermoul was a pure-blood. Conveniently ready to take his place, Rodolphus Lestrange offered to step into the role -- but Dumbledore turned him down, giving the position instead to ex-auror Oswin Callow. Insistent on joining Hogwarts, Rodolphus was forced to take on the only other available role at the school, Charms Professor. Teaching, however, is the last thing on his mind. Lord Voldemort has specifically assigned him the job of infiltrating the school, removing his Dark Mark so his true allegiance can't be discovered. Although there is wide public speculation about who the Death Eaters could be, no one knows who they are for certain and, while Professor McGonagall has her doubts about Rodolphus, Dumbledore has put his faith in him. And Dumbledore usually knows best. Doesn't he?
Meanwhile, the students of Hogwarts have their own problems to deal with. As Remus Lupin reaches maturity, the werewolf part of him does too and, with new urges to fight against, his transformations are becoming harder to deal with and harder to hide. The students are struggling to deal with school, politics, and one another, and the world around them is only becoming harder to deal with. Death Eater attacks are becoming more violent and more frequent, and the Minister for Magic, under public pressure to find Cattermoul's killers, has released the Dementors from Azkaban to join in the search .
And the problems are only beginning...
