How to apply and join the game
Once you have read the rules and looked at some of our current game threads to get an idea of the game and the standard of writing we hold ourselves to, and if Mr. Peeves' horrendous behaviour hasn't scared you off -- and frankly I wouldn't blame you if it had -- then it's time to join the game!

How to join
- First, decide which character you would like to play. We accept both canon characters and original made-up characters. You can check the list of available canon characters, see which jobs are still available, or create a new character entirely from scratch.
- Next, please register an account. You can make this any name, it does not have to be your character's name. You can change that later by going into your 'edit profile' options underneath your 'User Control Panel'.
Creating your character
- Nobody's perfect -- some of us (like myself) come close, but flaws define our characters and make us both human and interesting. Being stunningly beautiful, naturally talented at magic, fully knowledgable about the magical world and all its secrets, and amazing at everything you try doesn't make for interesting reading. We don't want your characters, either canon or original, to become what are known as Mary-Sues: characters that are perfect.
- On a similar note, please try to make your characters believable. Hogwarts is a British school full of British students and so we will likely reject a character who is American for no discernible reason, has extraordinary abilities far beyond their age, or has a past which is unlikely or neccessitates other characters to have acted out of character, such as Voldemort slaughtering your character's entire family before their eyes yet, for reasons unknown, leaving them alive. Would he do that? Would he really? (The answer is no. No he wouldn't.)
- We encourage our players to use avatars to represent their characters to make it easy to distinguish between posts. Hollow Art is a good place to find avatars if you aren't very good at making graphics. Icons must be no bigger than 100 pixels wide by 100 pixels tall. To add one to your profile, click on 'User Control Panel' at the top of the page, click on the 'Profile' tab and the 'Edit avatar' link on the left-hand side.
Remember to check the list of all taken 'played-by' actors to ensure no one is already using the person you would like to use to represent their character.
Writing your application
- After you register an account, please create a profile for your character detailing their history and personality. Use the application template to give us a good understanding of your character. This is neccessary for canon characters as well as original characters although for characters whose appearance we are well-acquainted with (do wash your hair, Mr. Snape. As a student here you represent Hogwarts and I fear what people may begin to think of us), an avatar will suffice. To upload an avatar, click on your User Control Panel and go into the 'Profile' tab. On the left-hand side, you will see an option for 'Edit avatar'. The maximum size is 100 pixels wide by 100 pixels tall.
- On the application template, you will find an example role-play post from Peeves the Poltergiest which we would like you to respond to in-character so we get a feel for your character and a good sample of your writing style. The post is set in Hogwarts; if your character would not normally be found in Hogwarts, please write a reason for them being there in your response. You should write your response to this as if it was a role-play post on the board; don't control Peeves' actions or the actions of any one else and don't feel you have to finish the scene, just respond to what has already been written.
- Learn by example: look at the approved character profiles for an example of what we're looking for.
Posting your application
- Once you have written your application, please create a new topic on the 'Applications' forum with your character name and occupation in the title, e.g. 'Minerva McGonagall - Professor of Transfiguration'.
- Please wait until we've approved your character to start playing. If we think your application needs tweaking or there are some things you could improve on before you start playing, we'll let you know. If this happens, please revisit your application and feel free to try again.
Joining in the fun
- Once you've been accepted, it's time to play! Change your username your character's full name with proper capitalisation and spaces, e.g. Minerva McGonagall. This is because there is no 'display name', so the name you log in with is the same name that shows beside your posts.
- Start plotting with the other players by posting in the 'Relationships' thread or sending private messages to the characters you would like to play with. Remember to check the list of school prefects and teams and the list of which characters are in which lessons if you are playing a character at Hogwarts, along with the known in-game information to see which characters yours is likely to know and have a history with.
- Find a post that's marked 'open' or start one yourself and join in the fun!
